FOCUS: CONCEPT AND FORM

On the verge of coming of age, the Festival celebrates, with Focus program, the short film as a space for experimenting language and expressing visions of conceptual and personal worlds, without setting the good narrative film aside.

The showcase brings 28 films, most of them shorts that have "made history" in previous editions of the Festival. Focus's first two programs, We All Do Short Films 1 and 2, show a varied and multifarious panorama of shorts exhibited in previous editions of the Festival, from where we are able to pick out significant elements of unique works by their makers, all currently with solid careers and a peculiar and coherent work on film.

The third program, Fragmented Perceptions, grants the public with the opportunity to watch films that use different and daring language styles regarding the themes broached, at times creating rarely seen hybridism among the genres, like mingling social political denunciation and video clip language as seen in “Now”, the anarchic, irresistible intertwining of animation and vanguard experimentalism of “Fast Film” and the mixture of movie history record and love declaration of “The Beauty Queen and the Dinosaur”.

Programs 4, “Jens Jonsson”, and 5, “Eduardo Valente”, in addition to their retrospective character, also intend to aim at the future. Several times awarded in festivals like Cannes, Berlin and Tampere, the short films directed by Jens Jonsson, born in 1974 in Umea, Sweden -, draw the most possibilities out of the format, the result being an expressive and vigorous work, which reveals a rich arsenal of audiovisual means, unique and still in progress. Besides the short films already exhibited in other editions of the Festival, Program 4 of Focus will present the latest work of Jens Jonsson, “Linerboard”, inspired on the universe of Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke.

In the fifth program we present Eduardo Valente's award-winning films “Daughter and Father” and “Sentimental”, plus three shorts he picked up himself, in which he took part in the production process at different levels, making up a dense, stirring and somewhat authorial/affective character. We remind you that Valente's new short, “Monster”, is in Enjoy the Short program of this year's Festival.
