International Showcase

The Internet is getting the Short Film Festival increasingly closer to short filmmakers from around the world. And as digital media becomes more accessible, the number of film entries for the International Showcase also increases; this year more than 2,500 short films got submitted, from all continents. To get an idea, exactly ten years ago, the Festival had 609 registered films.

It is true that production has also flourished, as demonstrated by the array of countries the films are coming from. Among those selected - 60 in total - there are films from 40 different countries. It draws attention for example, the amount of co-productions. Overall, this shows that the mobility of directors also increased. If a country does not offer the opportunity for training, the director moves to ensure the realization of his dream.
One of the highlights this year is the production selected from the Middle East and North Africa. They are films that go beyond the topics that one might expect in the face of local political reality to bring small human stories and aspects of daily life. Among them is the Turkish ‘Silent’ (SESSIZ/BE DENG) by L. Rezan Yesilbas, winner of the Palme d'Or for best short film at Cannes this year. Other films that also won prizes in major festivals around the world are part of this year's programming as well as unreleased or rarely seen films ready to be appreciated.

We usually offer the opportunity for viewers to follow the careers of some directors. This is the case this year for Portuguese João Salaviza who is already known here for his film Arena, Golden Palm at Cannes in 2009, who returns three years later with Rafa, who won the Golden Bear in Berlin.

If in recent years, many short films reflected a bitter taste of crisis, this year it seems that life got a little sweeter. Problems never totally disappear, that's for sure, but some are concerned with the most important aspects of life - love and the other. And there are those who shrug their shoulders to the crisis and just keep going ahead.

The short film format has this agility, this readiness that allows the anxieties and joys of the moment to be shared with the audience very quickly. And this year with this tour of the world, we offer a selection of different films that only the short film format can produce, featuring a wide variety of genres, themes and forms. So enjoy and immerse with us in this experience!
