CINE BIKE RIDE
  • This year's Short Film Festival offers the second edition of Cine Bike Ride, an activity that combines bike ride and outdoor short film screenings. This year, the bike ride will take place not only in São Paulo, but also in Sorocaba.

Moviegoers-cyclists leave the meeting point and ride their bikes to the screening spots where highlighted films from the festival get open-air projections. Some projections will be conducted by the Cine Solar Project, a Brazucah initiative powered by a van equipped with solar panels capable of generating all the energy needed for the screenings.

CicloColetivo, formed by former students of the Senac University Center Bachelor’s degree in Audiovisual, which is supportive of the project, organizes this event.
ABD 40 YEARS
  • ABD - Brazilian Association of Documentary and Short Film Makers – celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2013. It is a time to celebrate the decades of struggle for independent cinema and the renewal of its language, especially in the short film and documentary genres. ABD has always been a place of training for many filmmakers and cultural managers who were and are still active in the Brazilian audiovisual market.

In January this year, ABD’s São Paulo office elected a new board of independent filmmakers who brought a proposal for horizontal management for the entity. Besides the representation of short film and documentary makers, São Paulo filmmakers are now supporting independent production, including feature films. The aesthetic debate also returned to the agenda, alongside the usual political and institutional discussions.

ABD-SP wishes to integrate a vote for the future and the opportunity to think a new way of cinema and cultural policy making to the celebrations of 40 years of ABD. We invite all to participate in our activities and achievements in partnership with the São Paulo International Short Film Festival.

  • Project Kino Thought and Action is a new activity that’s starting to be developed by the Cultural Association Kinoforum, aiming to promote reflection on current reality through the audiovisual. The project is being launched with the Critical State program (see p. 96), a set of recent short films that instigate the debate on human rights issues.

In this edition of the Festival, Cine Olido and Espaço Itaú de Cinema sessions will be followed by discussions with guests and the action also takes place in partnership with the Movement in Defense of Slum Residents (MDF) and Editora FiloCzar, who participated in the selection of films and will be provoking discussions in the regions where they operate, respectively on the east and south of São Paulo.

PARTNERSHIP WITH AUDIOVISUAL SCHOOLS
  • Audiovisual schools of São Paulo are valuable partners of the Short Film Festival; many activities are carried out with them not only during the event but also throughout the year. The goal is to stimulate audiovisual students' contact with the short film format and their participation in the Festival, opening a channel of communication to the wishes and proposals of the new generation.
The work begins with a round of visits to schools in the first semester to present the activities and also to invite students to participate.

Each year, students from an institution get in charge of producing the making of the Festival, shooting footage and interviews throughout the event. This year, the Santo André Free School of Cinema, in the ABC Paulista, will take care of the event making of.

Students are also incorporated into our team as interns in different areas of action, working and living the routine of the event production. And many others participate as monitors, accompanying guests and the public over the nine days of programming.
Also part of the activities, in partnership with educational institutions, are projects Short Review and Kino Nights (see opposite page), and the Students Showcase, whose films are indicated by schools. In 2013, the big news is the Program in Progress project, whose aim is to awaken the curatorial activity, geared mainly to film analysis and criticism. Groups of students from some universities will schedule a session up to 60 minutes in length for screening inside the university itself during the Festival, followed by a conversation with classmates.

The Short Review Project, held annually at São Paulo International Short Film Festival since 2005, invites audiovisual school students to reflect on the possible visual aesthetics of the format.

This year's Short Review Blog becomes the main space of the workshop, enabling closer contact between filmmakers and texts written about their films during the event.
