Latin American Showcase
The Latin American films selected this year perhaps may bring a feeling of strangeness; subverted traditional approaches and unusual themes surprised the selection committee and present a challenging scenario for the viewer.
Most comedy and humor movies for example come from Argentina, whose clinical and cerebral cinema is presented here through a funny, cynical view about the human behavior. Not surprisingly, some of the most gloomy shorts of the selection are also Argentinean, flirting with atypical subjects like taxidermy and the supernatural.
The world of men is also present in several works from north to south; sharp visions of the implicit rules of male friendships create power, drama and conquer games that redistribute roles and reframe human relations.
Another curious aspect is the sense of displacement generated by films of filmmakers abroad: a Bolivian in Belgium, an Argentine in China and a Mexican in Germany show works somehow affectionate but quite sober, always geared up to their countries of origin.
The strong Chilean cinema affirms a social criticism while exploring the crushing of the individual in the face of big corporations and the economic scenario of our times. Violence sparked by drug cartels in many Latin boundaries is also represented in a tragic drama and an animated documentary.
It is worth noting the creativity of these documentaries that challenge conventional concepts and explore their subjects under visceral, playful or affectionate points of view, through the mixing of genres and multiplicity of registers. Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela and Cuba complete the tour around the continent.
