From a universe of over 2,500 enrolled short films – from 95 countries! – productions that bring the format’s freshness were selected, discussing themes dear to the particular realities of each director, but that make themselves universal in their humanity. It is always risky, but also very tempting, to profile and find common features among the films. What called our attention this year was the family subject. Family issues are in the agenda of the new filmmakers’ generation (it’s always good to remind that many films come from audiovisual schools) or, more specifically, the new family settings that are far from usual. The theme even motivated us to create a special program about family and homosexuality, “Sexual diversity – Family issue”.
The music universe is also present in the subject or in person. In the movie Three stones for Jean Genet, the muse of rock Patti Smith visits the grave of the writer and playwright Jean Genet, taking an offering with her. The grunge idol Kurt Cobain, in turn, is the Canadian short film’s theme Nevermind. The music is also present in the life of the protagonist of Jukebox, a singer forgotten by his fans, and in the soundtrack of the experimental Returning to Aeolus Street, which plays with old Greek songs.
This year, the films performed by entrants registered in the International Showcase will also run for an award offered by Festival’s partners.
