Even not being a competitive event, Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival counts on its public to select the favorite short filmes in its programs.

The chosen filmes receive a wide range of incentives, prizes and trophies, offered by our partners, supporters and sponsors.

Itamaraty Award for Brazilian Short Films
  • A R$ 20.000,00 (twenty thousand reais) prize for an up to 15-minute long Brazilian short film subscribed and select for one of the Festival’s programs, to be chosen by a jury commissioned by the Brazilian Foreign Affairs Office in partnership with the Festival’s organization.

    Itamaraty Award for Brazilian Cinema was created by the Foreign Affairs Office in 2006 aiming to promote domestic cinema through money prizes for different categories, including Best Short Film. Since 2013, in a partnership with Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival, it was stablished a new special prize for the format, that comes to its third editon this year.

    The juri that will choose the film has the following members:

    Pascale Faure

    Responsible for short film programs and creations of Canal +, is invited to participate of juries of awards around the world.

    Erika Bauer

    Graduated in Cinema and Television by HFF - Hochschule fuer Fernsehen und Film (München) and teacher at Social Communication at Universidade de Brasília. She is also a screenwriter and a documentarist. Organized several cinema showcases and was curator in several festivals

    Wilhelm Faber

    Member of the Berlinale Shorts Selection Committee and coordinator of the Berlinale Special & Strategic projects.

Breakthrough Award
  • The Breakthrough Award aims to support young Brazilian audiovisual talents in their next production, up to 15 minutes long. To achieve that, the Festival establishes partnerships with companies in the field, which indicate specialized journalists to be part of a jury and offer the required resources for the new project.

    Eligible for the Breakthrough Award are directors of Brazilian films produced in audiovisual courses exhibited on Brazilian Showcase, Sao Paulo Panorama and Student’s Showcase. The selection process also considers a brief written extract sent in by filmmakers explaining the idea for their next project. 

    The film produced with the resources provided by this Award is committed to make its premiere on 28th Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival.

Trophies and highlights
  • Prêmio Vermelha - Spcine

    A trophy and an award of R$ 1.500,00 (one thousand and five hundred reais) to the best film in Brazilian Showcase, Sao Paulo Showcase and Student’s Showcase, directed or codirected by a woman, that includes female characters or stories approaching women in a complex and non stereotyped way.

    Trophy ABCA “O Kaiser” to the Best Animator

    The trophy “the Kaiser” refers to the first film animation artistic film that’s ever been known, created by the cartoonist Seth (Álvaro Maher) and his first exhibition date of January 22 1917, at the Cine Pathé, Rio de Janeiro.

    DESTAQUE LGBT: Troféus “Borboleta de Ouro”

    Three highlights (one Brazilian film, one foreign film and a special prize) to short films that approach sexual diversity, selected by the team of Cineclube LGBT among the 2015/2016 films exhibited in Festival’s programs.


    Two Special Mentions will be given to short films produced in Audiovisual Workshops that will be exhibited in TV Cultura programming.
