Latin American Showcase
"Only the bull knows where it takes its passengers.
It's a secret that no other animal can know."
Taken from the lines of one of the 28 films of this year's Latin American Showcase, these words sum up the spirit of the selection: through original and meticulous narratives, the films lead the viewer into their particular universes, often in deep, unconventional connection with the state of the world.
Colombia stands out with six films that prove the great moment of its cinematography, celebrated in recent years by the world’s biggest film festivals. From its maritime coast to the depths of the Amazonian jungle, Colombian natural landscapes permeate and carry fiction and documentaries with strong visual and emotional impact.
Interpersonal relations go through a review: mourning, taboo and prejudice expose contradictions and redefine family, social and work ties in films from Mexico, Chile, Puerto Rico and Peru. The brutality among men, a theme that echoes the strange situation that we see in the world we live today, is also a concern in the region as a whole. Perhaps as a reflection of this scenario, a supernatural essence emerges as a founding element for several films, ranging from stories that flirt with classic fantastic realism to narratives inspired by regionalisms and traditions of ancestral indigenous peoples. By the way, indigenous issues form an important axis of the selection, observed from a more dense and less foreign point of view.
As a counterpoint, the irreverent Argentinian cinema and its cerebral questionings on the most varied subjects, the hectic Cuban mindset in face of the promised restoration of relations with the United States and the revisited scene of the filming set of Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo in the Peruvian Amazon bring humor to a panorama of films that reflect the broad current scenario of the Latin American short film.
